Chapter 7

: Killer Shrubberies

The bear-satyr’s crazed laughter echoed through the labyrinth of shelves.

“All green things bow to me, including you… witch.” His eyes glowed an eerie green.

In response, a sickly light pulsed through Isabel’s artificial limbs, spreading from her wooden fingers to her toes. She seemed to wobble for a moment and suddenly drew her sword, but something was wrong. Her movements had gone from graceful and fluid to jerky and uncoordinated, like a puppet pulled by invisible strings.

“I… I can’t… control them!” Isabel stammered, horror flooding her face as her arms swung erratically, the blade in her hand slicing through the air so the girls yelped and dodged back out of reach.

Fuck! It wasn’t the blue flowers controlling the satyr… he had been controlling them. And now he was doing it to Isabel’s body.

Every muscle in Isabel’s form fought against the pull, but her limbs were under his control now. Her panic rose as her legs began moving on their own, stepping toward Vicky with unnatural speed.

"No... NO!" Isabel’s voice cracked, the terror in her tone rising as her body betrayed her.

Out of reflex Vicky raised a wall of ice, and Isabel impacted it face first with enough force to crack the ice. Face bloodied and stunned she kicked the icewall, and her living wood leg shattered a hole right through it.

“Jeff…” the pale woman called.

Cracks snaked through the ice shield like spiderwebs. One more hit and it would shatter.

But it was her sister that moved first. “Izzy! Snap out of it!” Mia screamed, rushing up behind her.

“No!” Isabel screamed as her body spun and thrust her blade at Mia.

The kid made a desperate stop, just barely avoided getting impaled through the neck. She shrieked, backing away. Isabel strained against the invisible force controlling her, but her wooden limbs surged after her.

“Stop me!” Isabel screamed. “Somebody! Mia, stay back!”

The satyr’s control swept her sword low, clipping Mia below the knee. Mia gasped in shock as she crumpled to the ground, clutching her leg.

“Perhaps I will make you two a matching pair!” the satyr-bear growled. “It will make you both less defiant.”

“Mia!” Isabel’s scream was terrified. “Please… please stop…” Isabel sobbed as she tried to pull back, her own strength useless against the satyr’s power. “I’ll do anything!”

“Yes… you will,” the creature replied.

Just as the sword slashed for Mia’s shoulder, a shimmering blue shield of magic snapped into place and the blow deflected off.

Jeff glared at the giant monster. “There’s something you should know about me,” he said, moving forward to get its attention. “I’m going to kill you…”

“Not today,” the thing muttered, eyes fixed on Isabel. He yanked her around to face Jeff and sent her into motion again, blade raised.

“Jeff… just kill me,” the girl begged.

And a moment later she jerked to a stop, ice fixing her legs to the ground.

“Let’s not jump to drastic measures so quick,” Jeff gave her a smile and Isabel’s face was pure shock at the sudden reprieve.

“You got her?” Jeff asked over his shoulder, never taking his eyes of the horrific bear-thing.
